Who's my dad? When genetic testing gets complicated.
It’s estimated that millions of Americans have learned through home genetic tests that they’re not actually biologically related to a parent. Most aren’t prepared for this surprise. And many aren’t briefed with informed consent before getting the news. Betty Cohn has a Ph.D. in Public Health Genetics from the University of Washington. For her dissertation, she spoke with people who had this experience. To learn more before doing genetic testing, check out this Genetic Testing Consent Informational Flyer We can only make Seattle Now because listeners support us. How a Civic Assembly Changed Minds on AI. Plus, the WA Lawsuits Over Schools and Housing
A civic assembly of 29 Snohomish County residents just spent three weekends wrestling with one of the thorniest questions in local government: how should officials use AI and should they use it at all? Today on the podcast, host Jane C. Hu talks with KNKX reporter Nate Sanford and assembly participant Dhruv Raithatha about what it's actually like to build consensus with strangers. Then contributors Brett Hamil and Chase Hutchinson join for a midweek medley covering Washington's growing list of federal lawsuits, the Seahawks' new billionaire owners, the Seattle Public Library levy fight, and a new film shooting in the city next month.
