Is President Trump Coming to Seattle? Plus, SCOTUS ruling preserves WA mail-in voting

Today on the podcast, host Jane C. Hu is joined by Tuyen Than, Executive Director of the Chinatown International District Business Improvement Area. They talk about the history of the organization, why some residents want security cameras in the district, and the news that the CID recently broke a world record! Then Jane is joined by contributor Hannah Krieg and creative producer Liam Billingham to discuss the news that the Supreme Court has ruled to preserve mail-in voting ballot deadlines in Mississippi and how that affects Washington. Finally, they talk about the relatively low-key protests over the weekend at the World Cup and the news that President Trump may make a visit to Seattle. If you enjoyed this interview with Chris Chappell, the Brewshed Alliance Director of Washington Wild, learn more here. 42 Years of The Wildrose, King County's Unsheltered Homelessness Surge, and Listener Mailbag

Today on the podcast host Jane C. Hu is joined by guest Rachel Karp, creator of the podcast Cruising and author of The Lesbian Bar Chronicles, along with producer Sam J. Leeds to dig into a savvy real estate decision that’s kept The Wildrose – one of the oldest lesbian bars in the country – operating for the last 42 years. Rachel also shares the storytelling event they’re hosting at the Rose on July 12. Then Jane and Sam are joined by contributor Guy Oron to talk about King County's latest Point-in-Time Count, which counted more than 18,000 people experiencing homelessness in one night. Guy explains the complicated bigger picture, what the data says, what it misses, and the $67 million in federal funding on the line. Finally, Jane digs into our listener mail bag to share some shoutouts from City Cast Seattle neighbors, and discuss a new plan to close the Burke-Gilman Trail’s missing link through Ballard. Kraken Select F William Tomko 204th Overall!

The Kraken’s final selection is here! Meet William Tomko! Tomko appears before us as a Right shot Forward at 6’0, 198 pounds, playing for the Sioux Falls Musketeers, who will be heading to his first season at Ohio State. He has distinguished himself through a high energy, physical playstyle that allows him to go get after pucks with aplomb. Let’s all welcome William to The Deep!

Kraken Select D Rylan Singh 198th Overall!

The 1st of the last round of the playoffs involves a young man from Pickering! Rylan Singh plays for the Guelph Storm, having a respectable line for a defenseman in OHL time, and stands at 6’0, 187 pounds; shooting right. Here are his stats!

Kraken Select D Ola Palme 166th Overall!

Another swede! This one having fallen quite a bit according to the prognosticators! Palme comes from the Växjö Lakers HC U20 team, where his smart, sensible game as well as quick passing gave him a respectable point total for a defender, and a nod for Sweden’s U18 World Juniors roster, where they won Gold. Palme was also ranked by EliteProspects at 100th overall, 79th overall by The Hockey News’ Tony Ferrari, and 38th among EU skaters by the NHL Central Scouting poll. This young man may be a hidden gem? It remains to be seen. Let’s all welcome Ola to The Deep!

Kraken Select Luken “Hawke” Huff 148th Overall!

I do not mean this lightly. Hawke Huff might be in the top 10 of names in this draft, and there are some good names in this draft. Huff comes to us from the Cedar Rapids Roughriders in the USHL, where he stands at 6’3, 198 pounds. He’s an overager, but he’s definitely built for pro hockey at this stage. How he handles the next step, playing for St. Thomas in the NCAA, remains to be seen. But I mean, any time you can draft someone by the name of Hawke Huff, you gotta do it. Let’s all welcome Hawke to The Deep!

Kraken Select Defender Finn Kearns 131st Overall!

Now this is an interesting pick. Seattle traded down for this pick with the New York Rangers, and selected a player from Prep High School, who is now committed to playing at Umass Amherst for the Minutemen this Fall. He was unranked by everybody, and while his dimensions of 6’3 and 212 pounds is enticing, we’re probably gonna need to see some of what he can do at UMass before we make any real judgements on him. What are you cooking here, Jason? Let’s welcome Finn to The Deep!

Kraken Select F Viktor Fedorov 99th Overall!

The Kraken used their 99th overall pick to get a little russian flair in their draft class! Fedorov comes from Tomsk, Russia, sitting at 5’10 and 183 pounds, shooting left. He plays in the Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod club; which like all Russian teams, tends to ping-pong it’s prospects across their teams until they find a spot in which they can sit. As a result, he played in all three levels of their system and got points in all of them; showing a patient, intelligent style of play while not shying away from physical contact. His point totals aren’t going to wow anyone, but he was spending a lot of time getting sent up and down the Novgorod system this year, so it’s at least understandable. With more stable minutes, I imagine he’ll start to blossom into who he really is. Here are his stats! Let’s all welcome Viktor to The Deep!

Kraken Select F Casey Mutryn 38th Overall!

The Kraken’s 2nd rounder was used on USNTDP winger Casey Mutryn! Mutryn hails from Norwood, MA and is 6’3, 203 pounds, shooting Right. He’s primarily known in the USNTDP circles for his defensive game, which has made him a nightmare to forecheck against, as well as his willingness to get physical without overcommitting. Here are his stats! Stats provided by EliteProspects.com Let’s all welcome Casey to The Deep!

Kraken pick Chase Reid 7th Overall!

OH MY GOD CHASE REID WAS AVAILABLE FOR THE KRAKEN AND THEY TOOK HIM Chase Reid is a Michigan born defender who stands at 6’2, and weighs in at 194 pounds, shooting Right. He was considered one of the better skaters in this draft, and finished his season with the Greyhounds with 48 points in 45 games. He’s set to play for Michigan State University this fall. Here are what his stats look like; per EliteProspects.com Really cannot overstate how happy i am with this pick. Just a slam dunk choice. Let’s all welcome Chase to The Deep!

World Cup Pride Protests, Montlake’s Plan for Permanent Affordable Homes, and Jane’s Three-Ferry Century

Today on the podcast, host Jane C. Hu is joined by contributors Marcus Harrison Green and Brett Hamil to discuss the record-setting attendance at the Juneteenth World Cup event last week and the more contentious collision of Pride weekend with the Egypt-Iran match — two countries where being queer can mean facing prison or the death penalty. Then, a proposed Seattle City Council bill could turn a former SR-520 Bridge staging area into permanently affordable homes priced starting at $250K. But who actually qualifies? And Jane wonders, can nonprofits be trusted to manage this land for decades? Finally, the three talk about weekend plans ranging from seeing Supergirl in theaters, a magazine launch party, and Jane’s three-ferry century bike ride. Oh, and if you’re a City Cast neighbor, it’s bonus segment day! Jane is joined by producers Liam and Sam to discuss a new robot built by a Seattle startup that “wants to be your kid’s classroom buddy and your mom’s new friend.” Tune in for a discussion that ranges from the Disney Channel Original Movie Smart House to intergenerational relationships and transhumanism.  Learn more about the sponsors of this episode: Woodland Park Zoo Seattle Restored Washington State Fair Argosy Cruises Grand Central Bakery Want to get in touch?
